(POST THIRTEEN)
13 REASONS WHY
SOUND STUDY
This is the original scene from the series, this allowed us to study each aspect, as we had watched it multiple times to get the timings, sound effects and the narrative in time. When we first watched it we listened to the sounds, and then the second time we chose to record the timings, for example when the narrator (Hannah Baker played by Katherine Langford) would stop and start speaking we would note down. This made it easier when editing the final outcome as we already had an understanding of the timings within the scene.
When studying sound, we were given a scene from 13 reasons why, this allowed us to focus in on all small details of sound within a small scene. This scene shows the main character (Hannah), acting as the narrator, speaking for the duration of time, therefore this had been the first key aspect of filming the sound, as this had been the main focus. The other details of the sound had been the background music and the school bell (which had been played at the end of the scene), had been applied in the later stages of editing. When recreating this scene we chose to use Beth Harmer as the narrator, for this the timings had to be accurate. Once filmed, we layered the audio with the original clip of the scene.
DIAGETIC AND NON-DIAGETIC SOUND:
Whilst studying sound within films and tv programmes we learnt about the aspects of diagetic sound and non-diagetic sound, this allowed us to understand the main differences of the importance of both different aspects of sound. Within this scene both have been used, for example diagetic is the sound heard by the characters within the scene, therefore the footsteps and the narrators talking can be heard by the main character meaning the audience can also hear this. Non-diagetic sound within this scene is the music as only the audience can hear it. This video explains diagetic and non-diagetic sounds within film...
This image shows how our group timed the sound within the small clip..
HERE IS OUR FINAL OUTCOME:
Overall, I think our final outcome had been successful, as the timing had been close to accurate. However, the only thing we would have changed is where we recorded the narration, as the room had made the dialogue full of echo sound, we chose to record the sound in that room as it had been silent and empty, therefore it had been successful in not having any background noise, which had been important for a narration.
