POST 30: Working from a script 11. Making Narnia

(POST THIRTY) 

MAKING NARNIA

EXTERIOR

We used a forest in Wymondham which was local to us so it wasn't too long of a walk to get to. Although, it was very cold and quite frosty, this just added to the atmosphere we wanted for Narnia as it supposed to be winter time. We made sure that our actors (when they weren't being filmed) had warm coats on as we didn't want them to get too cold.

We chose to not do snow to make our Narnia as we thought it would create too much mess and it would be hard for us to get the snow in every angle we wanted to film. If we were to do snow, it would mean that we would have to limit what we could film as we would have to make sure snow was in every scene and cover a lot of the forest area which would mean a lot of time would be spent after cleaning it up. 

We also chose not to use a lamppost as there wasn't any nearby to where we were filming so instead we used a tree as we believed it would be more effective than just having a lamppost in the middle of a forest.  We believed that we should work with the resources we had instead of spending a lot of time on something that we thought we look very odd.

This location was picked between one other location and we chose this one because we thought the lighting would be best as we are able to use natural lighting. The viewer is able to see from the lack of leaves on the trees that it is nearly wintertime which is the look we were aiming for. Furthermore, although both locations were in public, this one was in a forest that not many people went through meaning we could film as much as wanted and we knew there wouldn't be any cost or any chance of people walking into the scene.

The lighting we used was natural lighting and we tried to film it in the morning so we didn't have to rush with any shots or angles and the image was clear and easy to see. The trees allowed there to be some darkness in the frame but this only added to the mysterious atmosphere that this scene needs. It was still light enough to allow you to view everything in the frame. 

INTERIOR

We used one of our teams wendy house's to film the interior scenes as this had a cosy rustic feel that was similar to the scenes in Narnia. Also, this was local to us again being in Wymondham and so was easy for the actors and team to get to. We used natural lighting that was coming through the windows in the Wendy House to make sure it didn't look unnatural. When time got on and it got darker outside, we used lamps and lights to brighten up the scene so you were still able to see the actors and their expressions. We made to film just before it was getting dark and when it was getting dark to match the lighting in the Narnia scene. We used stools and a fireplace that were already in there to match the ideas in the Narnia scene to try and get it as similar as we could making sure Lucy looked small in comparison to Mr Tumus. 

For our process of making Narnia, the people shown in the photograph mainly worked with the camera work, directions, sound, and the two characters of Narnia Mr Tumnus (second from the right) and Lucy (third from left sitting down).
